Ottawa, ON – July 15, 2025
Following a successful nine-month pilot in Bruyère Health Long-Term Care, Esprit-ai is proud to have been chosen as a trusted vendor to reduce falls and pressure ulcers for residents in care homes.
The pilot, conducted in collaboration through Discover + Adopt, a program offered by the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), powered by Baycrest, focused on fall prevention and reducing pressure injuries among high-risk residents.
Using under-mattress sensors and AI-powered analytics, the Esprit‑ai Sense™ solution provides real-time alerts for bed exits and repositioning events.
During the pilot, staff achieved a 91% adherence rate to repositioning alerts, and 64% reported the bed exit alerts helped them respond more promptly. Importantly, no resident falls were recorded during the evaluation period.
This latest initiative marks the culmination of a multi-year relationship between Bruyère Health and Esprit‑ai, which began with early evaluations in retirement and transitional care settings. Esprit‑ai’s technology was first featured in Bruyère Health’s 2020–21 Annual Report, recognizing research led by Dr. Frank Knoefel on implementing sensor technology at Bruyère Health Greystone Transitional Care. Subsequent research, including a 2022 publication in Healthcare Management Forum, documented the successful adaptation of Esprit‑ai’s platform using a human-centred design approach tailored to various care settings.
“The long-standing collaboration between our care teams and Esprit‑ai has enabled iterative improvements based on real-world insights,” said Dr. Frank Knoefel, Physician and Senior Investigator at Bruyère Health Research Institute. “We’ve tested many smart technologies over the years, and it says something that Esprit‑ai is the company we are now proud to adopt.”
“We saw meaningful improvements in resident care using the Sense™ system,” said Melissa Donskov, Vice President of Residential and Community Care at Bruyère Health. “The alerts helped staff focus their attention where it was needed most, which contributed to timely responses and better adherence to repositioning protocols.”
“At CABHI, we’re committed to accelerating the adoption of innovations that improve care and quality of life for older adults,” said Shusmita Rashid, Director of Knowledge Mobilization and Strategic Relations at CABHI. “Through our Discover + Adopt program, we supported Bruyère Health in piloting Esprit-ai’s Sense™ technology—an effort that generated strong results and directly led to its adoption. This collaboration shows how pairing the right innovation with the right care setting and implementation support can turn promising pilots into lasting impact.”
“We’re honoured to have worked alongside Bruyère Health over many years, evolving our solutions to meet the needs of diverse care settings,” said Patrick Tan, CEO of Esprit‑ai. Their innovation team, researchers, and frontline staff have played a critical role in shaping a product that truly works for residents and care providers alike.”
