St. Patrick’s Home Selects Esprit‑AI Following Successful Trial of Fall‑Prevention & Pressure‑Ulcer Reduction Technology

Ottawa, ON – October 21, 2025

Esprit‑AI is pleased to announce that St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa (St. Pats) has committed to procuring its Sense™ AI‑based bed monitoring solution after a successful trial period. The transition from pilot to full adoption underscores St. Pats’s commitment to leveraging innovation to address critical care risks in its senior population—particularly falls and pressure injuries.

This development comes on the heels of earlier deployments at Bruyère Health, which moved from pilot to formal adoption of Esprit‑AI’s technology in long-term care settings.

From Trial to Procurement: A Responsive Approach to Senior Safety

During its pilot at St. Pats Esprit‑AI’s Sense™ was embedded on two floors and provided real‑time, non‑intrusive alerts to staff through the nursecall system about resident bed exits and opportunities for repositioning. Early results demonstrated significant improvements fall prevention and adherence to repositioning protocols.

Encouraged by these outcomes, St. Pats’s leadership approved a full procurement.

“We are thrilled to adopt Esprit‑AI’s Sense™ technology across our facility,” said Monique Patterson, CEO, St. Patrick’s Home. “This procurement reflects our confidence in the trial results, Esprit-ai’s technology maturity, and it demonstrates our dedication to minimizing the risk of falls and pressure injuries for our residents.”

Why This Matters Now: Risk Landscapes for Seniors

Falls:

  • Among Canadian seniors, between 20% and 30% fall each year, making falls the leading cause of injury‑related hospitalizations in older adults.
  • In long-term care environments, the risk is higher: about 50% of LTC residents fall annually, and nearly 40% of those fall more than once.
  • Fall-related hospitalizations for Canadians 65+ have risen by 47% (excluding Québec) between 2008 and 2019, and fall-related deaths have increased by 111% over a similar period.
  • In 2022 alone, there were 78,076 fall-related hospitalizations among Canadians 65+, with 34.4% of those involving hip fractures.

Pressure Injuries (Pressure Ulcers):

  • In long-term care and institutional settings, pooled estimates put the prevalence of pressure injuries at ~11.6%, and incidence at ~14.3%.
  • In a study of long‑term care settings, up to 36.8% to 53.2% of residents exhibited pressure ulcers, with incidence in some homes ~11–12%.

About Esprit‑AI

Esprit‑AI develops AI‑powered, non‑intrusive sensor systems designed for senior care environments. The Sense™ platform is installed under mattresses (no wearable devices, no cameras), detects micro-movements, and delivers alerts for bed exits, repositioning and wander prevention needs in real time. In this deployment it’s adoption is aimed at reducing falls, pressure injuries, and the downstream costs and harms associated with them.
